Spun Sugar and Wings

Soon after Venerable Interhouse was Avery Interhouse! This year, Avery’s theme was “Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show,” so basically, everything was pink. Pink cotton candy, pink runway, pink wallboards, pink balloons, pink dance floor, pink streamers…pink no longer looks like a real word. As a member of Avery, I received all of the emails, from the theme surveys, to the runway ideas, to the pleas to help with construction, art, and food. In less than a month, Avery pulled together a really impressive party! Avery is known for having great food at their Interhouse, and this year was no different. There was of course the cotton candy, expertly manned by John:

This is a picture taken early on in the party, before he was covered in spun sugar. In addition to the cotton candy, there were delicious mini cupcakes, tea sandwiches (cucumber and ham varieties), ham/cheese/cracker platters, pink sparkling lemonade, and frosted animal crackers. Here’s a picture of the tea sandwiches, which I was rather taken by:

In the food area, there were also large hanging canvases painted by Avery frosh so we could earn our wings! Some people wore very interesting outfits to the party to show off their unique styles. I went with a lime green beanie:

In the beginning of the party, everyone crowded around the food, leaving the dance floor empty:

It was a pretty cool dance floor, with a pink runway leading up to it for people to strut their stuff. The lights on the dance floor also pulsated in time with the music. There were glow-in-the-dark sticks, and people stuck them in my hat:

We left the party to attend the alternate Interhouse, where people watched a movie, played board/card games, and best of all, drank boba! Then we came back to a packed dance floor:

I wasn’t expecting to spend so much time at Avery Interhouse, but I ended up having a great time! I appreciated how both Venerable OPI and Avery Interhouse had something for everyone to enjoy, from milkshakes to dancing to boba. The two houses had different approaches to their parties, and both were very successful (and beautiful and delicious!).

It was the Friday night of midterms during my first year at Caltech, and I was alone in the library. That weekend (week five of term, if you’re keeping count) also happens to coincide with Halloween. But as a bright-eyed frosh trudging my way through Ma 1a lecture notes, I was just baffled that no one else was studying alongside me. Spoiler alert: not all Caltech students spend Friday night—or every night—studying or grinding sets, even during midterms. And especially on Halloween weekend.
