Grand Canyon Road Trip


This past weekend, a bunch of friends and I decided to go to the Grand Canyon for a few days. Living on the East Coast before this year, I had never seen it before. One of my favorite things about Tech is how close we are to so many national parks, forests, and monuments. We even got to drive by Mt. Whitney on a geology trip last term.

Anyway, we started from Caltech, all piling into our car with some snacks and hiking gear and were off-ish… despite leaving at 3:45 PM, we ended up getting stuck in LA traffic; it took us nearly two hours just to make it 12 miles away from Pasadena. Once we got deep into the desert, though, there was nothing but a few trucks for miles.

We arrived around 1 AM in Willams, Arizona, a town along historic Route 66. It had all of the flashes and flourishes you’d expect; neon signs everywhere with the highway number, old western murals painted onto the sides of buildings, and little gift shops where you could buy any Arizona tchotchke. A fun fact about Caltech is that we are super close to Route 66, too! Colorado Boulevard, the name of the Route down here, is only a few blocks away from campus. We, unfortunately or fortunately, do not have all of the flash of Williams in Pasadena.

The next morning, we drove about an hour to the canyon. When I saw it for the first time, I was in awe. It was an ocean of reds, yellows, whites, and browns stretching as far as the eye could see. We could see millions of years of history in the stratigraphy of the rock, from the dark igneous and metamorphic rocks at its base (over one billion years old!) to the Kaibab limestone we were standing on (only around 250 million years old, a drop in the bucket in geologic time). Impressive is not a strong enough word for what the Colorado River did to the land to make it like that.

We spent a few hours hiking around the rim. At one point, I nearly lost my cellphone, dropping it as I approached the edge. We eventually decided to hike for a while down into the canyon. Going downhill was a breeze. We made it nearly a mile and a half in a half an hour, including time spent just standing and photographing the beauty of the canyon. We were deciding whether to hike down farther when we heard an ominous clap of thunder in the distance, a sound almost foreign to us Techers used to Pasadena’s constant sun. While normally it is worse to be up high in thunder storms, since the Grand Canyon is so wide, it is common for even the lower sections to be struck by lightning. We decided to head back. Although we ended up making great time (it took us less than an hour to hike back up), it was difficult. I thought my heart would leap out of my chest and fall straight into the canyon at some points. At one point, we had to take a break because we were all feeling too dehydrated (always remember to bring extra water when hiking in the hot desert!).

We finally made it to the top and headed for some dinner with a view. Nearby, I stopped at the gift shop, picking up some prickly pear jam, a delicacy not normally sold in California.

The next day, we headed out, stopping in Flagstaff for a barbeque brunch (I had some of the best potato salad ever) and Phoenix for Whataburger (my friend from Texas missed it…although I am vegetarian, I did enjoy the free drinks). On the way out of Phoenix, we drove by one of my own personal paradise: mountainsides filled with Saguaro cacti! Cacti are one of my favorite types of plants—I even grow two of my own! I just love how different they are from basically any other plant I’ve seen; they’re almost like little desert hedgehogs with their spines. Fun facts about the cactus—it is the Arizona state flour, and in the state it’s a class 4 felony to cut one down. Despite it being nearly 110 degrees and parts of the asphalt on the road were melting, I made everyone stop so we could go up and touch one. It was amazing!

Here I am with the Saguaro Cactus! It looks like it’s growing its first arm, indicating it is probably over 75 years old! Nothing else that eventful happened on the way back to Tech. I did pick up some key limes in a huge, cheap grocery store (see what I did with them in my next post!). When we finally got back to Caltech, I was exhausted. We accomplished so much over those few days, and I had an amazing time doing so.
